Clinical Research Unit (KFO 142) -
Molecular and cellular aging – from mechanisms to clinical perspectives
Aging can be described as a continual loss of specific organ functions with an age-associated increase
in morbidity and mortality. It is known, if not in molecular detail, that intrinsic and extrinsic
aging processes are regulated through genetic factors, complex “cross-talk” among signal transduction
cascades and a variety of environmental factors.
The goal of this clinical research group is to define the intrinsic and extrinsic aging mechanisms and
to develop novel preventative and/or therapeutic strategies which will enable “healthy aging”.
Therefore, these nine projects provide a mechanistic, preclinical approach to elucidate the
causative factors which drive the aging process and the corresponding use of this information
in a prospective clinical setting.
